Have you ever experienced upbeat motivation in the morning and it just disappears 5 hours or minutes later? Or have you experienced the excitement to conquer your life and achieve your dream but it puffs into the air a moment later? It is just like the Chinese idiom says “3-minute warmth”, which means temporary burning passion.
I still remember the purpose of creating this blog is to write my experience in entrepreneurship and public speaking, however, I’ve long forgotten it after first 2 posts! The motivation has vanished! TERRIBLE!
This morning, I get a chance to watch a youtube video talking about the secret of self-motivation. It is 22-minute long video, thank God I have clicked and finished watching it (after strenuous struggling). The speaker is Mel Robbins who is the writer of THE 5 SECOND RULE. Click the image below to watch the video.
In the video, she mentions how she masters the art of self-motivation and successfully changes her own life. Just like how the title of the book sounds, 5 seconds are what we need to motivate ourselves. We always know what we want and need to do (KNOWledge), but hesitation always kicks in and stops us from doing so (KNOWledge ACTION Gap). When hesitation happens, it sends a stress signal to our brain which is designed to be the most sophisticated self-protection mechanism. Our brain will say: “Alright, uncomfortable, uneasy, Let’s not do it.” Then we stop! Nevertheless, Mel shares that there is a micro-window before hesitation takes place. That’s when we need to make a decision before we proceed with auto-pilot mode. That’s when the 5 seconds apply. During rocket launching, they always count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… then the rocket will shoot up into the sky with maximum speed. We can wire ourselves to work in such way too. When we know what we need to do, count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and make a decision to do it (shooting up high) before the devastating hesitation kicks in.
Do not let your auto-pilot mode to allow hesitation sink in and cause procrastination. Making the right decision is our choice; empower our behavior; improve our performance; to transform our lives. So whenever we know what to do, count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, JUST DO IT!
P/S: I will use this technique tomorrow not to hit the SNOOZE BUTTON!
